METAPLASIA

A Contemporary Performance of Butoh and Paint

The first professional Butoh (舞踏)performance in South Carolina, USA History

"Michael Krajewski and Corin Wiggins created an unforgettable new art experience. Just terrific in every way.

Of course there are forms of dance in other contemporary performances that might have moments of tight muscular displays and amazing uses of the human body but this choreography was all that and more. One could not be more amazed at the continuous display of unique body positions and display of unusual movement at times that seemed to be either not possible or perhaps unique only to this amazing practiced performer...But then we were riveted again by a whole new art attack as Michael threw himself at the dancer’s floor - now up on a wall and stained by Corin’s white smears. In an almost frantic attack Michael went to work drawing his style of images across the nearly 15 foot expanse of canvas. This new “dance” continued to captivate the audience as we all watched as a complete new artwork took shape in our presence.

It will be a very hard act to follow by anyone…"

Ron Hagell - Gemini Arts CEO

"The night began with Wiggins’ haunting butoh performance, an avant-garde Japanese 'dance of darkness' originating in the late 1950s. The performance then transitioned into a neo-expressionist live painting of the set by Krajewski. The result was a surreal collaboration between Wiggins’ psychedelic dance and Krajewski’s authentic painting, one that disturbed and astounded."

Jack Bradshaw - The Post and Courier

"Unforgettable event. I am sure all will be talking about this event memorably."

Michael Morris - Gemini Arts Resident Artist

"Thank you for such a wonderful night, Corin & Michael! I could not help but be captivated by the incredibly physical, meditative, interpretive, and spiritual experience and energy emanating from this show...my eyes were glued & mesmerized by what was taking place before me; time passed and yet felt frozen as I had to consciously remind my lungs to breathe! I felt just as much a part of the performance as I was an audience member, and the combination of art forms - the seamless collaboration of dance/voice/visual art- was truly unique and special. A one of a kind show and nothing like I've ever experienced before."

Kristen Marie - Audience Member

"This was absolutely a true merger of visual and performing arts."

Susanne Necker - Audience Member

"I wasn’t really sure what to expect from Saturday’s performance of Metaplasia but to say I was blown away would be an understatement...People were on literal pins and needles, with body language demonstrating intense immersion in the experience. It's been a long time since I’ve seen so many people, many strangers to each other, collectively buy into such a unique collective performance all at once. Hats off to Corin Wiggins and Michael Krajewski."

Neill Rose - Audience Member

"Wow! What an incredible experience last night being able to witness Metaplasia at Gemini Arts! Corin Wiggins' performance was tragically beautiful...Michael takes on the daunting task of covering a giant canvas in his art in a very short time. I've never seen anyone make art so fast!. He did it and it was amazing! I really loved it as a whole but they cut it up into pieces and auctioned it off. Brilliant! Very evocative and moving experience."

Field of Flesh

Assistant Director and Core Deviser

"At times sardonic and scabrous, at other points poignant and mournful, Field of Flesh breaks down the fourth wall around the dysfunctional family dinner of realist drama and asks us to think about where we might fit at the larger table—if we even fit at all."

Kerry Reid, Chicago Reader

"Field of Flesh is an aggressively fast-paced and thoughtfully bleak examination of the family unit and death. It’s a high risk, high reward experience that open minded, experienced audiences will find worthwhile."
